Plaza de Santa Ana

Created five centuries ago, Plaza de Santa Ana is not only the main square of the city but is also the most representative of the island's history, witnessing all its important moments. It was Spain´s first planned Town square, and later squares in South America were modelled after it - formulated to fit the civic-administrative purposes of the Spanish Empire outside Europe.

The most important administrative and religious institutions of the island - the cathedral, the episcopal palace, casas consortiales, along with the Town Hall, the territorial audience and the Regental House were built around it.

From a social point of view, the Plaza today is the epicenter of the city's activities, holidays, and religious festivities. See the Plaza on Google Maps »
